Gaza strip: Israeli shelling kills 40 in Rafah; Cease-fire collapses

At least 40 people were killed by Israeli shelling in city Rafah, on the southern part of Gaza Strip, only hours after agreement on Israel – Hamas 72-hour humanitarian truce.

The Israeli military has told people in Gaza that it is resuming operations, blaming Hamas, as well as other Palestinian armed groups, for violating the agreed 72-hour ceasefire, without, however, providing further information

The ceasefire was to be followed by Israeli-Palestinian negotiations in Cairo on a longer-term solution.

Some 1,460 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have died in the conflict and 63 Israelis, mostly soldiers.
