All Greeks to get high-speed internet access by 2020

All Greeks will have accessibility to high-speed internet services of over 30Mbps by 2020, and at least 50% of Greek families will have internet access to speeds of over 100Mbps, Infrastructure, Transport and Networks Minister Michalis Chryssohoidis said on Tuesday.

In his address at the 25th annual Greek Economy Conference by the American-Hellenic Chamber of Commerce in Athens, Chryssohoidis said that these targets, worth over 2.8 billion euros by 2020 - and perhaps reaching as high as 4.3 billion euros - would be funded largely by the private sector after the state provides a favourable structure for investments' viability.

"The speed of networks reduces communication and dissemination problems that are created by the country's relief map, with its scattered islands and successive mountain range, so it restores the option of a more balanced growth," he said, adding, "It also significantly reduces expenditures and the cost of social services, therefore it is an important tool at times of crisis and recession to retain the main body of the social state and relieve the socially weak."
