Increases in Greek VAT to take effect on July 20

The new increases in VAT will be implemented from July 20 (Monday) to ensure the smooth transition to the new rate, the finance ministry said in an announcement on Thursday (16/7).

The change will affect products and services which are moving to the higher rate (from 13 pct to 23 pct), such as packaged foods, restaurants and cafeterias and tickets of public transport.

The ministry clarified that the rise in hotel VAT from 6.5 pct to 13 pct will take effect on October 1, while on the same date the lower VAT in popular islands will also be abolished.
