Village in Lefkada bears the brunt of damages after strong earthquake

The village of Athani in the southwestern part of Lefkada suffered the biggest damages in houses and infrastructure after the 6.1-magnitude earthquake that hit the island on Tuesday morning killing two people, authorities said.

A 60-year old woman died inside her home in the village of Ponti Vassilikis when the tremor dislodged a large rock from a hill, which struck one of the home’s outer walls and fatally injured her.

Another woman died in the village of Athani.

A government team, headed by Deputy Infrastructure Minister Panagiotis Sgouridis, visited the village and is expected to assess the damages and come up with an action plan, while police, the fire department, doctors and ambulances are on stand-by.

In Athani, many houses have been deemed uninhabitable and tonight people will be accommodated in hotels in the nearby village of Basilica or in tents which will be set up near the village. The village is near the Eggremni beach, where landslides covered a section of the beach and a large part of the road leading to it with boulders and earth.\

Damages were also recorded in the island’s water and electricity network.
