Greek winemakers oppose to tax on wine

Greek winemakers oppose to the imposition of a special tax of 40 cents per litre provided among others in the omnibus bill with the prior actions tabled in Parliament that will pave the way for the disbursement of the 2 bln euro sub-tranche and the 10 billion euros for the recapitalization of banks.

The Greek Wine Association noted in a statement that "it is a proposal that aligns neither with the Greek nor the European reality as the imposition of tax on wine has repeatedly been discussed in the competent EU institutions and the Common Market Organisation.

No country, no EU member state that produces wine, has ever imposed taxes on wine. Only member-states that do not produce wine have, for obvious reasons, done so".
