The European Union and Turkey continue to be bound by the agreement on the migration and refugee crisis, European Commission spokesperson Natasha Bertaud said on Thursday.

She had been asked to comment on a statement by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that Turkey will "open the doors" for migrants to Europe unless it received more help for dealing with refugees.

Bertaud noted that both sides remain dedicated to the implementation of the EU-Turkey deal on migration and that this will continue "in good faith". She also pointed out that the EU has already extended aid amounting to 5.6 billion euros to Turkey to support refugees and that the remaining 400 million euros, out of the agreed sum of six billion, are due to be disbursed soon.
