Operations centre set up in Tourism ministry to tackle problems following Thomas Cook collapse
The tourism ministry has been galvanised into action by the financial collapse of the British travel agency Thomas Cook, which is an unfortunate development that affects the entire European tourism industry, including that in Greece.
Tourism Minister Haris Theoharis and Deputy Minister Manos Konsoleas are in open communication with all the parties involved in order to resolve the problems arising from this development.
An operations centre has already been set up at the tourism ministry to tackle the problems, such as the repatriation of some 50,000 tourists who have holiday packages from Thomas Cook and are currently in the country.
Theoharis said that the process of repatriating foreign tourists to Greece through Thomas Cook has started and the first 15 aircraft are expected to arrive in Zakynthos, Corfu and Kos.
"We estimate that around 22,000 tourists will be repatriated within the next three days," the minister said.
The minister noted that coverage of the costs, accommodation and repatriation of tourists has been secured.
The tourism ministry is consultating with the finance ministry and the relevant ministries to find ways to support Greek tourism businesses affected by the incident.
At the same time, the leadership of the tourism ministry has convened an extraordinary meeting with representatives of the country's tourist sector organisations and associations.
