Energy minister welcomes EU decision on reduction of natural gas consumption

Greece's request to the EU for calculating cuts in natural gas consumption in relation to the previous year as opposed to the average of the last five years, was accepted at the extraordinary council of energy ministers in Brussels, said the Environment & Energy Ministry on Tuesday.

The EU energy ministers approved an emergency plan for all EU countries to voluntarily reduce natural gas comsumption by 15% from August to March 2023, ahead of further potential reductions in supply to Europe by Russia.

In addition, Greece, together with Spain, Italy and Portugal, introduced a successful provision in the emergency plan approved in Brussels, whereby volumes of natural gas used by power plants can be excluded from the cuts calculation, in the event of an emergency in electricity generation.

Commenting, Greek Energy & Environment Minister Kostas Skrekas said that the agreement "sends a strong and decisive message of EU unity and solidarity against Russian blackmail."
