As he states in his report, the coroner Minas Georgiadis, the death came from multiple injuries all over his body and a broken sternum, which was caused by a sharp instrument (possibly a baton). The coroner also seemed to suspect electroshock on a hand, referring to signs on Karelis' lifeless body. According to the report, his body bore multiple fractures from threaded objects (batons), while the time of trauma is consistent with the time of the murder (March 25) the unfortunate officer. Based on these findings, the coroner speculates that "the cause of death was due to the sternum injury from blows with batons".

The Albanian lifer Ilia Kareli , who was detained in Nigrita prisons, was found dead in his cell late Thursday night. According to an announcement by the Ministry of Justice, a disciplinary preliminary examination was ordered to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death. The ministry confirms that Karelis arrived wounded in the jails, but without revealing the causes.

In the announcement it's mentioned:
"The defendant, who was accused of murdering the officer of the detention facility in Malandrinos, was transferred yesterday (27/03/2014) at approximately 15.45 to Nigrita prison for reasons of personal safety. He was placed in a chamber of newcomers at 18.30 alone and away from other prisoners for a constant monitoring by the staff of the penitentiary. Indeed, within the space of detention a camera was placed for a complete monitoring and recording of all movements. At about 23.30, officers of detention facility noted that he wasn't moving, while being in bed for hours. Then they entered the cell where they found him without consciousness. They contacted the ambulance, which came in 17 minutes and transported the prisoner to the General Hospital of Serres, where his death was certified.

Simultaneously with the above disciplinary preliminary examination, a preliminary investigation is conducted by the police, which is using the camera, while the results of the forensic examination to determine the cause of death are expected. About the first brutal murder, it took place at noon Tuesday, the day of the national holiday, when the lifer with three stabs to the face, the body and the neck killed Giorgos Tsironis . The attack occurred in a wing of the prison of Malandrinos, while the prisoners were coming back to their cells. The lifer refused to comply.

With a makeshift knife, he attacked the officer in a state of rage, shouting "You won't give me a leave, I'll kill you". Colleagues of George Tsironi couldn't stop him and the stab at carotid was fatal. Reportedly, the lifer was sentenced to imprisonment of 20 years and six months for attempted murder and robbery. Lately, he had made an application for discharge under conditions, which was rejected, while he persistently asked for permission to travel to Italy where his mother is gravely ill.
