Greek producers hold meetings on Russian embargo
Producers in the northern Greek regions of Imathia and Kozani demanded the immediate drawing up of an inventory, the withdrawal and the destruction of fruits, especially peaches, that have not been sold because of the Russian embargo on agricultural products from EU countries as well as the payment of compensation to the affected exporters, reports ANA-MPA.
Producers' representatives, who met on Saturday at Veria, also decided to join forces with their colleagues from Spain and France so that they can coordinate their actions and demands.
Moreover, they called all exporters from the northern Greek regions of Imathia, Pella, Kozani and Florina for an emergency meeting on Monday afternoon.
Their conclusions and decisions will then be submitted to Rural Development Minister Giorgos Karasmanis during a meeting that is expected to take place on Tuesday.
Christos Giannakakis, head of the Imathia association of agricultural co-operatives, told ANA-MPA that in Imathia about 9,000 tons of unsold peaches have been stored away in fridges, over 50 percent of which were originally destined for the Russian market.
