Strong earthquake of 5.7 Richter east of Laconia

A strong earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale (5.8 on the Richter scale as measured in EMSC), occurred at 06:45 in the morning, in the underwater site of Myrtoou Sea, between Milos and Monemvasia.

The exact center of the quake was located 69 km. west of Milos, 76km. northeast of Kythira, 121km. east of Sparta and 145 km. south of Athens.
The focal depth of the earthquake is estimated at 80km.

At 06:48 followed an aftershock of 4.8 Richter.

The American Institute of Seismological estimates the earthquake at 5.6 on the Richter scale, centered 60km. west of Adamas, Milos.

According to the director of the Institute of Geodynamics, Maria Sachpazis, the magnitude of the earthquake was 5.7 on the Richter scale. The earthquake did not occur from a known seismic fault, and because of the focal depth was felt in a wide radius.

THE HEART OF THE EARTHQUAKE

The earthquake was felt in much of the country.

As pointed out by the professor Lekkas, speaking on ANT1 TV, the phenomenon was centered in seabed, 120 km. northwest of Sparta, accompanied by 3-4 aftershocks, with the first recorded at 5.8 on the Richter scale and the second at 4.8. So far there are no reports of damage in areas close to the quake center and the seismologists do not worry.

Later, Mr. Lekkas, speaking to SKY TV said that it was an "earthquake in big depth", so it was felt in several areas.

The professor of seismology at the University of Patras, Mr. Akis Tselentis said: "We had a strong earthquake 120 km. west of Sparta, which was felt throughout Greece. For a quake of this size to become so noticeable, means that it was close to the outer plate and the energy of the earthquake moved along the plate. Two quakes took place and the good thing is that the center was in seabed. If they were on land we would have several effects. Based on the history of this region and the tectonics of the region, 90% of my assessment is that this is the main earthquake."

"It must have been an earthquake of a big focal depth and that means that we will not have many aftershocks. I think there is no reason of particular concern," said Professor Efthymis Lekkas.

According to the information so far, there are no reported injuries or serious damage.
