Tsipras tours the region of Etoloakarnania

Main opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras sternly attacked the government and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis over the economy during his visit on Tuesday to the town of Messolonghi. "The picture I am getting on all my tours around Greece is that the economy is, unfortunately, again in serious trouble. The people of labour, of production and creation are again facing a deep recession, essentially without protection from the State".

"Mitsotakis managed to achieve something that is very hard for someone to accomplish. He took an economy running at significantly high growth rates and plunged it into recession in just four months, before the arrival of the pandemic. Through his inaction [and failure] to substantially intervene and address the great liquidity difficulties and to support enterprises and labour after the pandemic, the country now faces a nightmarish prospect," Tsipras said.

"I'm afraid this September will be the worst of recent years and I am also afraid that all the sacrifices of the Greek people will be undone in just five months," he added.

Speaking during his visit to Etoloakarnania, he said that it was a region with many problems and huge potential.

Finally, he announced that later he will visit the fishermen who, despite sustaining huge losses during the pandemic, have not been included in the sectors classed as stricken and currently face huge economic problems.
