Committee approves earlier vaccination with booster shot, says health official

The National Vaccination Committee approved the administration of the third (booster) dose of Covid-19 vaccines after a lapse of only three months - instead of six - since adults completed vaccination, Secretary General for Primary Health Care Marios Themistocleous announced on Friday.

Themistocleous said the online bookings for booster shots will become gradually available on the "emvolio.gov.gr" platform starting the same evening (Dec. 3). All-dose vaccinations will continue through Sunday (Dec. 5).

For those who have completed vaccination with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine there is no change; they will be able to book the booster shot two months after their vaccination, as already advised. Those who were infected with the virus may get a booster shot after three months have elapsed since their positive diagnosis, not six as was advised until now.

The committee's decision was related to the discovery of the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 in Greece, Themistocleous said, and the target is to have as many people vaccinated by January 2022 as possible.
