Staikouras: 1.4 billion euros projects for the restoration of road and railway network in Thessaly l

Transport and Infrastructure Minister Christos Staikouras on Wednesday gave the opening address at the 1st Forum for Thessaly, held in Volos, by referring to the actions taken to restore the region's road and rail network after Storm Daniel, with a total budget 1.4 billion euros.

Transport and Infrastructure Minister Christos Staikouras on Wednesday gave the opening address at the 1st Forum for Thessaly, held in Volos, by referring to the actions taken to restore the region's road and rail network after Storm Daniel, with a total budget 1.4 billion euros.

According to the minister, "the technical teams of the ministry's services carried out inspections to record the damage, followed by broad meetings with the regional governors and the mayors of the affected areas. The ministry then sent technical teams again for the inspection process. The second round of the deliberations between the entities concluded in March 2024, aiming at four packages of works costing 900 million euros plus VAT, specifically for the roadworks."

The money was allocated as follows:

- 293.4 million euros for projects in Magnesia

- 230.3 million euros for Trikala

- 184.5 million euros for Karditsa

- 85.6 million euros for Larissa

- 87.3 million euro for Evia

- 18.6 million euros for Fthiotida

The minister also referred to the interventions for a more resilient railway network in the region, with four contracts that include:

Restoration of the double Athens - Thessaloniki line (from Domokos to Krannona)

Restoration of the Paleofarsalo - Kalambaka line

Restoration of the Volos – Larissa line

Restoration of signaling and remote control systems from Paleofarsalo to Krannona.

The total cost of these projects amounts to 452 million euros and they are proceeding in close collaboration with the local authorities. According to the minister, the projects financed by the Recovery Fund will be completed by the summer of 2026, while the rest have a deadline of 15 to 48 months from the signing of the contract.

Works for the restoration of school buildings and irrigation networks in Thessaly are also underway.

The 1st Forum for Thessaly was organised by City Hub Events of the Alter Ego group and Tsomokos Communication, in collaboration with the Region of Thessaly, with the aim of highlighting the challenges facing the region and proposing new perspectives for its development.
