Social Cohesion and Family Minister Domna Michailidou on Tuesday presented the government’s latest actions in relation to housing, in an interview with ACTION 24 TV.

The minister described the housing issue as a “national issue,” emphasising that despite the high rate of home ownership, rental difficulties remain significant. She reminded viewers that the rebates of one monthly rent payment will begin at the end of the November, and she highlighted the positive results of the Housing Programmes:

“With ‘My Home 1’, 10,000 people acquired their own home. ‘My Home 2’, which began in February, has already helped 11,000 beneficiaries obtain housing and we are continuing. Just as we adjusted the criteria for ‘My Home 1’, we are now making adjustments to ‘My Home 2’ so that it becomes more flexible and can support more households. The programme remains open, with available funds reaching 800 million euros, allowing another 9,000 of our fellow citizens to acquire a home.”

“To give a clear point of comparison, in recent years banks approved about 2,000 housing loans annually. Today, in just two years, we have reached a total of 30,000 homes. This is the substantial support, not only of the market but, above all, of society,” she added.

Regarding the property prices of homes offered through the programmes, she noted that according to data from the Bank of Greece, they do not show higher prices compared to the rest of the market. This is because “many closed homes that had remained locked up — and burdened their owners with fixed costs without any benefit — have come back onto the market.”
