Tzanakopoulos: Uncontrolled corruption practices played key role in the fiscal derailment

Government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos commented on reports regarding the alleged transfer of evidence from German prosecuting authorities to Greece regarding kickbacks linked to the construction of the Athens metro in 2003-2007, as well as other news relating to the Novartis scandal, during the press briefing on Friday.

"The political conclusion is that the uncontrolled corruption that developed in Greece in recent decades played a key role in the fiscal derailment and prepared the ground for the major crisis of 2009-2010," said Tzanakopoulos.

The spokesman welcomed the completion of the third review of the Greek programme with Eurogroup Working Group's approval. The procedures for the disbursement of the 5.7-billion-euro sub-tranche of loans to Greece will be completed by mid-March the latest, following the necessary approvals from the national parliaments of EU countries.

Moreover, the first round of talks with the institutions on the fourth review, which finished on Thursday, mostly focused on organisational issues linked to the fourth review, he said. "We agreed to follow a strict timetable, with the Eurogroup meeting on June 21 as a milestone," he added.
