Main opposition New Democracy (ND) member of parliament Evangelos Meimarakis resigned his seat in the Greek parliament in order to run for a seat in the European Parliament elections in May.

Meimarakis, who is heading ND's euroballot, submitted his resignation in a letter to parliament president Nikos Voutsis on Thursday saying he refuses to make use of a recent amendment that allows Eurodeputy candidates to retain their seats in the Greek parliament.

The second runner-up Zoe Rapti will replace Meimarakis, who was voted in by the second Athens district, as first runner-up Argyris Dinopoulos said he will not take the seat.
