Settlement for arrears to the state enters «final stretch»

The government is in "the final stretch" of finalizing and announcing the 100 installments settlement for the repayment of arrears to the State.

The issue was discussed on Tuesday during a meeting between Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and Finance Minister Gikas Hardouvelis while all the aspects of the settlement were later considered at the meeting of Hardouvelis, Development Minister Nikos Dendias and Labour Minister Yiannis Vroutsis.

There are still open issues, which are related to the negotiations of the government’s economic team with the troika. However, time is running up considering that in September alone financial obligations towards insurance funds and other state bodies jumped by 1 billion euros and have now topped 70 billion euros.

One of the changes under consideration is that the settlement be applicable only in cases of overdue debt up to 1 million euros.

The government is also considering offering motives so that debtors who have made use of the 12 installments settlement do not “switch” to the 100 installments one, a development which would result in reduced budget revenues in the next critical months.
