The IELKA price survey of goods in the major supermarket chains in Greece in December 2019 is based on prices recorded at the stores of the large chains by IELKA researchers and interviews with market executives asking for their forecast of prices leading up to the week before Christmas.

The survey focuses on 22 typical product categories included in a Christmas dinner. The results show that:

1. Typical Christmas dinner product prices at major supermarkets in 2019 are down 1 pct compared to 2018, and are at the same level as in 2014.

2. While the final value of the basket is almost the same as in 2014, the value before VAT is reduced by 4 pct (due to the 2015-2016 VAT increases). The proportion of VAT remains increased by 20 pct compared to 2014, despite the latest reductions in 2019, as the specific goods examined in the survey do not belong to the categories where VAT rates have been reduced.

3. As was the case in recent years, there are significant opportunities to take advantage of discounts and offers made by large supermarket chains, allowing consumers to save up to 12 pct on average in the value of their purchases, while "smart" shopping allows savings of up to 20 pct.
