Turkish fishing boats near Greek shores sheltering from weather, coast guard says
The Turkish fishing boats that have entered Greek territorial waters are carrying fish cages with a catch caught in the Mediterranean and were heading to Turkey when they were caught out by bad weather and forced to seek more sheltered waters, the Hellenic Coast Guard said on Monday.
The coast guard was responding to press reports that the Turkish-flagged fishing boats were fishing in Greek territorial waters.
"The craft in question are moving at very low speeds and, as soon as weather conditions improve, will head toward their final destination, which is the Turkish shore. Consequently, there is no issue of fishing by Turkish fishing boats within Greek territorial waters," the announcement said.
