‘Government will be handing over a wounded democracy’ says Olga Gerovassili at Syriza’s 3rd Congress
The government will be handing over a wounded democracy, noted SYRIZA-Progressive Allinace’s parliamentary group secretary Olga Gerovassili during the party’s ongoing 3rd Congress, being held in Athens on Saturday.
Conservative governments like the current one, she added, “have been having us accustomed to centralism and the curtailment of human rights - both individual and political rights.”
Greece’s current government has implemented these attitudes in a number of issues, she noted, including in migration policy and in the media.
She also referred to the government’s so-called ‘executive state’, which she described as “clientelistic and intimidating to citizens,” and she also spoke about the parliament passing unfair laws hastily, while police “keeps violating both the constitution and several laws.”
Syriza is here to “to restore the democratic functioning of the state and its institutions, as well as citizens’ trust in the state.”
