Strong firefighting forces were battling a blaze through the night on Wednesday in a forest in Feneos, Corinth. According to the Fire Brigade the fire is under control while the firefighting forces have been enhanced and remain in the area in order to address any rekindling.

Specifically, 340 firefighters along with 15 firefighting teams on foot, the municipality's water trucks and digging machinery, assisted by 11 aircraft and 10 helicopters were operating in the area.

The Fire Brigade said that the wildfire broke out on Tuesday at about 15:15 in a remote forest with dense vegetation, something that made the firefighting operation difficult.

There are some reports of damage to houses in the village of Kastania, however the final assessment of the damages will be made after the fire has been fully contained.

Two men, aged 34 and 33 were arrested for negligent arson in a forest area while carrying out hot work involving a cutting wheel and welding, in violation of the applicable legislation, in an area of the Municipal Unit of Feneos, Corinth and an administrative fine of 11,812 euros was imposed on them.

The arrested individuals are being held in custody and will be brought before a public prosecutor on Wednesday.
