As the newspaper "Ethnos" mentions, twenty two years after the enactment of civil marriage, civil marriages are more than then religious ones. In 2012, for the first time in Greek history, something happened that probably seemed unthinkable a few years, civil marriages overcame religious!

In particular, that year, 25,730 couples were married in a civil ceremony and 23.980 with religious (51.8% vs. 48.2%). Indeed, the information from the notary offices provides a significant rise in 2013. "The trend last year was again raising, to an extent which could exceed 40-50%," estimates the chairman of the Steering Committee of Notariats of Greece, Constantinos Vlahakis.
