Specifically, the setting that will be defined, the shelf life of pasteurized milk will be determined by the industry, but after approval from the competent inspection bodies. Earlier, the Minister of Rural Development and Food Athanasios Tsaftaris showed improvements in the relevant legislation of the Ministry of Development after cooperation he had with Chatzidakis and were accepted by troika.

Asked about the issue, he referred to the meeting of the Scientific Council which would follow, where those responsible would negotiate on whether the elongation is possible and under what conditions. The opinion expressed is that they need to keep the five-day limit or marginally accept the six-day. However to avoid further jams with troika and confusion, that could be created by different views of scientists, they finally found the right balance.

So any industry that will move forward launching milk longer than 5 days will require a prior approval by the competent bodies which are estimated as an additional safety net of consumer interests. Alongside the adoption of the Greek label and the indication of the country of origin, are two elements that will contribute to informing consumers properly.
