Harlem School teaches the Greek language
Panoraia Panagiosouli says: "It's not just teaching the Greek language, divorced from its surroundings. We show the relationship of Greek with various things in the world. Thanks to new technology the world has become flat. Our students, through the teaching of Greek and different cultures will develop a greater appreciation for who they really are". The program began with the simple teaching of Greek as a foreign language, with the weight on grammar, vocabulary and some cultural elements. According to Panagiosouli, a ten-day trip of 33 schoolchildren and 19 escorts in Greece was important, as they were given the opportunity to see up close all that was taught in their classrooms. However she admits that her source of inspiration was her father, the novelist Gabriel Panagiosoulis, to whom she refers with pride, stressing that through his visions she was able to really appreciate what it means to be Greek.
