European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas on Monday expressed the disappointment of the Commission's president Jean-Claude Juncker that "despite his efforts" to facilitate talks between Greece and the institutions, progress has not been achieved.

Schinas underlined that the Commission remains in full readiness to contribute, as an intermediary, to the progress of the talks in case something new arises. The spokesman reiterated Juncker's view that if there is the necessary political will from all sides, it is still possible to find a solution before the end of the month. He also stressed that the only deadline is June 30 when the Greek program ends. As he said, the Commission wanted a solution before the Eurogroup of June 18, but this was not made possible.

EU Commissioner Pierre Moscovici's spokesman Annika Breidhart stated that the institutions' proposals are absolutely balanced and financially efficient. In general terms, she added, they refer among others to fiscal adjustment, management of tax collection, stability of banking system, clamping down on corruption.

She also underlined that the institutions never proposed cuts in pensions. Breidhart suggested that in terms of cost saving, the Greek proposals on pension are inadequate, since they represent only 0.04 pct of GDP.
Juncker will meet with ECB president Mario Draghi on Monday, in Brussels.
