Commissioner Moscovici speaks of annulment and not deferment of pension cuts

European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs Pierre Moscovici on Wednesday in an interview with Capital.gr spoke of the annulment of pension cuts and not their deferment.

Moscovici said that provided that there is fiscal room, the road is open to avoid the pre-legislated reduction. He also expressed optimism that the Eurogroup on December 3 will accept the proposed package because fiscal sustainability and a welfare state can co-exist.

The Commissioner underlined that he always hoped that Greece would become again a normal country.

Greece has presented a package of measures leading to a primary surplus of 3.5 pct, which translates into a general government surplus of 0.25 pct of GDP. The package also has a social character, which means it also contains housing measures that will cost 400 million euros and which we believe will reduce the risk of poverty among young people and low income groups.

Moscovici also left open the possibility of eradicating the IMF's second measure, that of a lower tax free threshold in 2020.
