"We can be moderately optimistic, the treatment of Covid-19 has improved, but patients with serious Covid-19 still have a high risk of death," the rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Thanos Dimopoulos, said to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA) regarding the treatment of novel coronavirus cases on Monday.

"Developing an effective antiviral drug in the near future does not seem like a realistic scenario, and more intensive research is needed in the field," he added.

However, about 10 months after the appearance of the virus - unknown, invisible and dangerous to all mankind - which spread alarm throughout the medical scientific community, important progress has been made in its treatment. Vaccines for prevention have already been approved and the treatment of the disease has evolved, Dimopoulos underlined.
