The Greek prime minister will be among many important world leaders that are taking part in the climate summit, such as US President Joe Biden, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi.

Government sources said that Mitsotakis will outline the Greek government's sweeping green transition programme and the actions being planned, such as phasing out lignite and increasing the share of renewable energy sources through new ambitious initiatives like offshore wind parks and measures for "green" shipping and to protect ecosystems.

Mitsotakis will emphasise plans to convert Greece into a green energy hub for Europe based on the recent agreement with Egypt and talks underway with Saudi Arabia.

The Greek prime minister is expected to also refer to broader goals and targets that must be set on a European and global level to tackle the climate crisis.

On the margins of the summit, the prime minister will have a series of bilateral meetings before returning to Athens on Monday evening.
