Tapping into the "silver economy," the Economy of Longevity and Ageing, represents a developmental opportunity for Greece, stated National Economy and Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis, speaking on Tuesday at the international conference "Economics of Longevity and Ageing."

"The probability that over 50% of children born today will live to 100 years old fundamentally changes the way we operate globally in the 21st century," he emphasised. He pointed out that with a coherent strategy, Greece can emerge as a leading example of adaptation to this new demographic reality.

"We often speak of the existential issue posed by the demographic parameters of our system. However, one can also view it as an opportunity — an opportunity for adaptation, an opportunity to change our economic model, an opportunity for our country to be positioned as a leader in this important transformation that is already underway and will intensify in the coming years," he said.

Referring to the book The 100-Year Life, Pierrakakis expressed the view that the "silver economy" is a sector in which Greece can play a leading role in the coming years, citing the example of countries such as Spain and Portugal, which have already made significant strides in this direction.
