In the coming days, consumers can expect price reductions on basic products as part of an initiative led by Minister of Development Takis Theodorikakos.
According to the Ministry of Development, official announcements will be made next week, confirming reductions on 1,000 products ranging from 5% to 10%. “The aim is for essential products related to food, home maintenance and personal hygiene to see price drops of at least 5%, maintained for as long as possible,” Theodorikakos said.
Meanwhile, supermarket inflation has already eased, falling to 0.6% in September from 1.6% in August, according to a survey by the Consumer Goods Retail Research Institute, which noted limited price increases in key products over the past 12 months.
The Institute, analysing Eurostat data, found that food inflation in Greece stands at 2.6% according to Eurostat’s Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices, reflecting the change between August 2024 and August 2025. By comparison, the European Union records food inflation of 3.9%, placing Greece fourth lowest in the EU this month.
The highest food prices are recorded in Romania, at 9.1%, following VAT increases, while Cyprus has the lowest, with deflation of 2.3% after applying a zero VAT rate to several basic goods in 2025.
It is worth noting that the Eurostat indicator covers all food and beverage outlets, including supermarkets, small non-specialised stores, grocery shops, bakeries, butchers, greengrocers, and farmers’ markets.
