1 to 3 Greeks live in poverty
According to data from the Survey on Income and Living Conditions made available by the Hellenic Statistical Authority , in 2012 the percentage was 34.6 % , corresponding to 3,795,100 people , and is higher than in other EU countries ( EU - 28: 25.1 % ) with the exception of Bulgaria ( 49.3 % ), Romania ( 41.7 % ) and Latvia ( 36.6 % ) .
Also other indicators of relative poverty lead to similar conclusions regarding the dimensions of the phenomenon in our country and the relative position of Greece compared with other EU countries
According to the Bank of Greece , the gap or depth of relative poverty , which measures the distance of the poverty line (for the whole population ) of the median equivalent income of people living below the poverty line as a percentage the poverty line , estimated at 29.9 % in 2012 in Greece ( EU - 28: 24.1 % ) .
This means that 50 % of the poor have income less than 70.1 % of the poverty line , ie less than 4,000 per year per person . Moreover , the population living in households in which no member is not working or working less than three months total time amounts to 1,010,900 people or 16.1 % of the population aged 18-59 years , while in 2011 and 2010 was 837,300 and 544,800 people respectively .
As is apparent from the available data , all indicators of risk relative poverty increased significantly for Greece during the first three years of the current crisis : The relative poverty rate increased by 3.4 percentage points or 17.3 % ( 2008 income : 19 7 % , 2011 : 23.1 % ) , the poverty gap increased by 5.8 percentage points or 24.1 % , while the risk of poverty or social exclusion has increased by 7.0 percentage points or 25.4 % .
However , vastly more dramatic is the decline of poverty indicators in the period of the current crisis , in absolute terms, ie when the poverty line remains constant over time in terms of real purchasing power .
The poverty rate for 2010 calculated the poverty threshold in 2005 ( 60 % of median income in 2005 expressed in 2010 prices based on the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices) was 16.3 % , while the corresponding figure for the next year research (2011 ) reached 22.9 % and in 2012 32.3 % .
As is apparent , the period of the current crisis within just two last years for which data are available almost doubled the dimensions of poverty in absolute terms ( increased by 16 percentage points or 98.2 % ) .
