The event was organised by the Crete regional authority with the support of local bodies and the social partners, in order to boost support of Crete's low-income groups. It involved a number of organisations involved in welfare, including the Church.

The minister also outlined the operational programme to provide basic food and material assistance to those without income.

Referring to the Guaranteed Minimum Income that will start in 13 municipalities on a pilot basis, in order to deal with extreme poverty, Kegeroglou said the Fund for European Aid to the Most Deprived aims to boost social cohesion in EU member-states and to reduce poverty and ultimately eradicate the worst forms of poverty in the EU. He said it complements national policies for combating poverty and enhancing social cohesion, with financing amounting to 330 million euros for 2015-2020.
