Seamen working on Corfu-Igoumenitsa ferries extend strike to Monday morning

Ferries connecting the Ionian island of Corfu with Igoumenitsa on the mainland will remain docked until 6:00 a.m. on Monday, following an extension of a strike by the local seamen’s union.

Union president Christos Vitouladitis told Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA) that both the Shipping ministry and shipowners showed unwillingness to commit to meeting demands that include a one-hour break between schedules, a night-shift bonus, and the continued use of closed-type ferries during the winter.

The Ionian Island district director Theodoros Galiatsatos expressed his and the council’s support to the seamen, calling for the resolution of unfair practices and extolling the importance of the sector to the economy.

Meanwhile, signs of shortages have begun appearing at Corfu supermarket shelves, as the island relies on the ferries for supplies.
