Irresponsible to discuss possible salary cuts in public sector at this time, Theodorikakos says

Special-purpose leave for civil servants with children up to 15 years of age will continue at Easter, regardless of whether schools would technically be closed anyway at that time, Interior Minister Takis Theodorikakos said in an interview with ANT1 on Thursday.

Referring to rumours of cuts in public-sector salaries, he stressed that the government is doing everything it can to protect businesses and employees and that it's irresponsible for anyone to discuss such issues at this time.

"I don't think it's serious to discuss on April 2 what we will do in terms of fiscal policy for something that is happening in two, five, or eight months from now, because no one knows when this will end," he added.

Theodorikakos also said that the interior ministry is subsidising all regions of the country with 12 million euros, to provide food for those in need.

Concerning the restrictions during Easter, Theodorikakos said that "if we go to our villages over Easter we will carry the virus to everywhere in the region. We will all stay at home with our family, talk on the phone and watch television."

Asked about the extension of restrictive measures and the attitude of the parties, he replied that "in general, the political system has shown responsible behavior in relation to the coronavirus crisis and so it must continue. This crisis leaves no room for political expediency. The goal is one: to help the health system hold up and for all of us to be here [when the crisis is over]."
