The bears have been wakened in Nymfaio!
Florina’s real gem gathers tourists from all over the world not only for its great cultural legacy but also for the alpine natural environment.
In Nymfaio is located the Arkturos’ shelter, where 10 bears live in 50 acres, divided in 4 parts.
These beautiful mammals were carried to the shelter after their injury in traffic accidents or their removal from some circus. At Arktouros found the love and care that they needed.
THEY WOKE UP FROM HIBERNATION
The absence of snow and the worm weather woke the 10 bears and that might means that the weather is going to be good for a long time.
They were in hibernation only for one month and a half, although they usually “sleep” twice as long, but this doesn’t worry the persons in charge.
“Hibernation is essential for the free bears which during extreme cold cannot find food. At the shelter though this is not a problem”, explains to APE-MPE Panos Stefanou from Arcturos.
THE BEAUTIFUL NYMFAIO
Nymfaio stands at 1.350m altitude, in east Vitsi in Florina district. It is a “preserved traditional settlement” and one of the most beautiful villages not only in Greece but in Europe too.
Surrounded by beech forests and traditional houses Nymfaio is a perfect location for winter tourism. Apart from its natural beauty, tourists can visit the Silver- Gold Craft Museum, the Folklore and History Museum, Agios Nikolaos Church and its bells from Istanbul dated back to 1856 and 1862, and the Wildlife Park.
In Unesco’s global competition, Nymfaio contests Melina Merkouri Price, for the excellent management of cultural and natural environment.
