Justice ministry considering changing law on decongestion of prisons to exclude some crimes
The Justice ministry is considering excluding from the beneficial provisions of a law on prison decongestion crimes such as homicide and rape, Justice Minister Stavros Kontonis said in parliament on Monday, responding to a relevant question by New Democracy MP Kostas Karagounis.
The minister defended the law created by his predecessor, Nikos Paraskevopoulos, saying that “it will continue to exist”, however he is examining excluding some crimes.
“For us, decongesting prisons is not an end in itself, rather the means to achieve better living conditions and the possibility for actions. Right now we are trying to introduce second opportunity schools in all correctional facilities because prisons should be a place of reformation and recovery of values,” he said.
On his side, Karagounis spoke against the law, noting the examples of prisoners who were released early by using the law only to commit crimes again.
