Citizen Protection minister calls on parties to reject Golden Dawn influence in schools

All democratically-minded parties should join forces to deflect the extreme-right Golden Dawn's (GD) efforts to poison school students with fascist ideas, Citizen Protection Minister Olga Gerovassili said in Parliament on Wednesday.

Gerovassili and other parties reacted strongly to a threat by GD Deputy Panagiotis Eliopoulos of incidents to be expected at a students' rally scheduled in central Athens on Thursdsay. Students from several areas of Greece are rallying against school takeovers by nationalists rejecting the Prespes Agreement between Greece and FYROM signed in June.

"We parties must jointly face this common threat and the efforts exerted (to influence) young people, who may be led astray by what is called 'love of country' and see it through distorted lens," she said.

Representatives of ruling SYRIZA, Democratic Rally, the Communist Party of Greece and Potami condemned Eliopoulos' statements and said those feeling nostalgic for the Greek junta and fascism should stay away from schools and students.
