Pasteur Institute's Andreas Mentis: Hopeful messages for better treatments, possible vaccine
"Greece took immediate measures against the coronavirus and I would say with great success, judging at least by the number of cases and the number of deaths, which remain at very low levels compared to others countries that are possibly more advanced in the health sector," the director of the Public Health Laboratories of the Pasteur Institute, Andreas Mentis, said on Tuesday in an interview with the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA).
He also expressed the opinion that Greece will be equally effective when planning its next steps for a gradual return to normalcy. "Summer will help a lot with the rise in temperature, since the virus, like all respiratory viruses, see a decline during summer. This will give us a breather and the time to see whether there are any better treatments or perhaps a vaccine in the fall that will prevent the virus' spread during the winter."
The Pasteur Institute, according to Mentis, daily receives 300-500 samples to test for covid-19 and the results are given out gradually during the course of the day. "There is pressure but so far we are able to serve all the needs regarding the samples that come from either hospitals or cruise ships that have a problem, or migrant accommodation facilities," he said.
Asked about the reliability of the rapid tests, Mentis underlined that "at the moment we are not in a position to know which ones are reliable and which are not."
