OPEKEPE: 11 defendants in subsidy fraud case released on restrictive terms
The first defendants who pleaded guilty in the case of the criminal organisation allegedly seeking to fraudulently obtain subsidies from OPEKEPE have been released on restrictive terms.
Eleven of the 37 defendants appeared before the investigating magistrate on Friday. All those who appeared are reported to have denied the charges, claiming they followed all legal procedures for obtaining the subsidies.
Except for the pregnant woman who was the first to testify, the defendants in the first group appear to have received only small amounts of subsidies. The pregnant woman appears to have received a larger sum and was also released following her testimony.
The second group of defendants will be brought in for questioning on Saturday. The process will continue on Sunday and is expected to be completed on Monday.
