Foreign nationals alleged to be responsible for 72 break-ins escape from police station

Three Albanian nationals early on Tuesday escaped from a police station in the south Athens suburb of Argyroupoli.

The three foreign nationals, aged 24, 28 and 31, respectively, were being held in a police jail following their arrest on suspicion of committing 72 burglaries of wealthy residences in Athens' northern and southern suburbs.

The suspects escaped after they managed to file the bars of their cell so that they could climb out from a window that was approximately eight metres above ground level, from which they either jumped down or climbed down the drainpipe and fled.

A manhunt was launched to locate the fugitives while an investigation into the circumstances of the jail break is underway.
