Pavlopoulos: Greece must be 'strong and respected', live up to its potential

Greece needs to restore its prestige, both within its European family and in the international arena, "to that level that gives our people and nation the strength and means to make their own contribution to the building of the modern world," President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopios Pavlopoulos said on Thursday.

He was delivering the opening address to the seminar "Greece in the Modern World: National Identity and the Challenges of the 21st Century" organised by the Marianna V. Vardinogiannis Foundation and the "Panathenian" Hellenic Women's Organisation at the Acropolis Museum.

"We especially have an obligation to consider the great cost of the mistakes of the recent past and give the generations to come the means and the opportunities to build our country's future, in line with its truly inexhaustible potential," the president added, urging the need to ensure that Greece was "strong and respected".

"Our first concern in this direction is the defence of our national issues - and by extension our national rights, - in line with the principles and values inspired by the Ephebic Oath of the ancient Athenians to 'not leave my country smaller, when I die, but greater and better, so far as I am able'," he added.

Without arrogance but with faith in its worth and abilities, Greece must strive to play its role and fulfill its mission within the European Union and the world, especially during these troubled times, defending international law and, through this, helping to establish peace, he added.
