Kikilias lashes out at government over Skopje name issue

New Democracy shadow defence minister Vassilis Kikilias, in an interview with public broadcaster ERT on Tuesday, accused the government of having taken a decision that was contrary to Greece's interests.

He added that 83-87 pct of the Greeks are against the government's policy on the issue of Skopje's name.

"The Greek people have condemned the way that the government has dealt with the Skopje issue," he said, adding that the government has handed over the Macedonian language and ethnicity by signing the Prespes agreement, along with SYRIZA's coalition partner Panos Kammenos and Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias. "This creates a situation that cannot be easily changed," he stated.

Referring to reactions and protests to the name agreement, he said that "the government is a target for the people's anger and disappointment because [the people] consider that its stance has harmed our history, traditions and our Macedonia."
