ND leader Mitsotakis proposes rewards for timely loan payers
New Democracy (ND) leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis met on Monday with representatives of the Greek systemic banks and suggested rewarding timely loan payers in the final agreement concerning non-performing loans.
Specifically, in the context of an agreement under negotiation between the government and the Hellenic Banks Association on protecting a primary residence from foreclosure, Mitsotakis proposed that the banks reward those borrowers that have been consistently disbursing their mortgage payments in the last three years, by reducing the repayment interest rate.
"Rewarding punctual borrowers is something that is missing from the public debate on the subject of non-performing loans," Mitsotakis said, and added that "this is truly unfair."
Furthermore, Mitsotakis reiterated ND's longstanding position that the final agreement between banks and the state should be viable and profitable for debtors, protect vulnerable citizens but also ensure the stability of the banking system.
