Reconstruction of Greece's fire-prevention plan to be a priority of ND government, Mitsotakis says
The complete reconstruction of the country's civil protection will be one of the first goals of the next government, New Democracy (ND) leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Thursday addressing volunteer firefighters, residents and students who participated in an event by the Mt. Hymettus (Imitos) Volunteers, on the occasion of World Environment Day.
The main opposition leader noted that "we must be ready for the worst, and always do the best", placing great emphasis on the need to reorganize civil protection so that Greece can be shielded from the extreme weather phenomena expected to intensify due to climate change.
Speaking with volunteer firefighters, he committed to radically restructure and strengthen civil protection service as of September, as long as citizens trust him to take over the country's governance, if the existing structure reveals any problems arising during the summer. He added that an integrated preventative plan against fires for the summer of 2020 will be launched in October.
