Main opposition SYRIZA spokesperson Alexis Charitsis on Friday accused the government of "dangerous amateurism in the handling Greek-Turkish affairs".

Speaking on national broadcaster ERT radio, he stressed that "clear and official answers are a legal and political shield for our national interests. Unfortunately, two days after the references by [Turkish President Recep Tayyip] Erdogan to 'grey zones' we are still waiting for the Greek government's official response."

Charitsis also noted that "the escalation of tension on the Turkish side exceeds everything we have seen in the last 20 years, something that appears to be a strategic choice on Turkey's part."

Unfortunately, he added, the government was failing to provide the appropriate diplomatic answers and was instead responding with knee-jerk reactions and handling that revealed a "dangerous amateurism". "We saw announcements that attributed the violations of the Turkish exploration vessel "Oruc Reis" to the weather and we saw ministers in the Mitsotakis government contradict themselves. We have not, however, seen any official reply to Turkey. The goverment must at last understand how crucial the stakes are and demonstrate the appropriate seriousness," Charitsis said.
