More vouchers for families to send children to nurseries and day care centers
Vouchers for nurseries and day-care centers will be increased by 20 pct, Deputy Labor and Social Affairs Minister Domna Michailidou said, allowing more families to send their children to the facilities.
Michailidou, responsible for welfare and social solidarity, made the statement during a meeting she had called with three unions of privately owned nurseries and day-care centers throughout Greece.
In addition, a ministry statement said, she underlined that all such facilities are obliged to have made all their buildings compliant with the fire-protection regulation by September 1, opening day for the new school year. She said that management also had an August 31, 2021 deadline by which all centers must be fully compliant with the building code.
The minister welcomed the initiative of related agencies to start registering the nurseries and day-care centers in collaboration with the Hellenic Statistical Service (ELSTAT), which is expected to be completed by fall and provide data on the market.
Michailidou said that "safety and fire protection is an exceptionally serious issue, especially when buildings contain young children," and added that the ministry had provided the necessary time for owners to best make their buildings fireproof and building-code compliant.
