Kotanidou: Situation with ICU beds manageable, as long as infections don't reach 500 a day

Anyone in need of an ICU bed next month will have one, Hellenic Intensive Care Society president Αnna Kotanidou asserted on Friday, speaking to Athens-Macedonian News Agency.

She also added that "we are trying [...] to create more beds and if necessary to turn other units into intensive care units for COVID-19."

She said that the situation is "manageable for the time being," adding that provisions are made so that "if ICUs for Covid-19 fill up by the end of this week, another 43 beds in multi-purpose ICUs may be put to use as of next week. For the time being, we have enough available ICU beds." The situation in ICU bed availability outside of Attica Region is excellent, she said, noting in terms of ICU beds, "There is only slight pressure there".

As Kotanidou told ANA-MPA, "We will start worrying when we see over 500 new infections for at least three days in a row."

Professor Kotanidou said that the best preventative measures for dispersion right now are the use of mask and social distancing.
