Meeting at civil protection HQ bans circulation of trucks between Larisa-Athens

A meeting held on Sunday to coordinate the state's response to the "Medea" cold front has decided to ban the circulation of trucks between the cities of Larisa and Athens. The meeting was co-chaired by Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrisochoidis and Deputy Civil Protection and Crisis Management Minister Nikos Hardalias.

As the bad weather reached Attica, Chrisochoidis said that the first wave of bad weather has passed over northern Greece and is heading to the southern parts of the country. He left open the possibility of extending the ban on heavy goods vehicles to the Peloponnese if the conditions require this, saying this will be re-examined during a meeting to be held on Monday.

"Our goal is for the roads to stay open," Chrisochoidis said, stressing that roads will stay open. "I want to send a message to all the residents of Attica, Evia and the surrounding region. We will be tested in the coming hours but the mechanism is extremely efficient."

Chrisochoidis said that the entire state mechanism worked flawlessly in northern Greece, where the conditions were in some cases extreme, while it will remain on full alert at all times until the bad weather has passed.

"There is vigilance at Civil Protection from minute to minute to deal with any phenomenon," he said.

"I am certain that, with the cooperation of the citizens, everything will go well. We ask people to not travel about without good reason. Those that go out must have snow-chains for their cars and be cautious as there will be a lot of ice and a danger of accidents. This will also pass. We are here to deal with the problems," he said.
