Greek president visits Demokritos research centre to mark Int'l Day of Women in Science

Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou visited the National Centre for Scientific Research 'Demokritos' on Friday, to mark International Day of Women & Girls in Science.

At Demokritos' lecture hall, Sakellaropoulou met and spoke with some of the centre's female science researchers. She also met with girls from the higher grades at nearby high schools Pierce College and Lycée Franco-Hellénique Eugène Delacroix, who are keen to follow a scientific direction at university.

Commenting on her encounter with Demokritos' researchers, Sakellaropoulou noted that these women "excel in a field which, for centuries, was considered a man's field, despite the significant female contribution to its development." Referring to the students, she said she was happy to see girls who love physics, math and technology.

Sakellaropoulou was welcomed by Demokritos' Board President & Director Giorgos Nounessis, and also by Director General Christos Markou
